I've heard 'on the street' that the AC bonus from Combat Expertise & ICE is being treated as Dodge AC for the purpose of flat-footing. Can anyone verify this? Krsboss 23:12, 2 July 2007 (PDT)

Combat expertise and range touch attack: no attack penalty?[edit source]

It looks like even if you have combat expertise activated, there is no penalty if you use range touch attacks... Checked with a warlock.

Can anyone confirm? 20:27, December 29, 2015 (UTC)

A player has informed me that Divine Shield is free AC when compared to Combat Expertise. I suggest they are comparable, one however grants potentially high AC gains for the cost. But if spellcasting, then Combat Expertise would be considered free as an instant action with no penalties. Divine Shield still requires a round to activate.

Combat Expertise; -3 AB, +3 AC (use tactically or when not attacking, ie spell casting) suggested only as pre-requisite with Feint or Spell Casting.

Roughly on average players will be 15% less effective with their normal Damage per Round when active. If dire, micro management may yield improved results, activate after each flurry of attack and then de-activate after each of your opponents flurries.

compared to

Divine Shield; 1 round to activate, 5 to 10+ AC (dodge AC risk) high AC gain when active.

Optimal, activate with charging opponent and opponent dies on last round of duration. Opponent likely gains first strike and distance is variable (questionable if free action especially if more buffs are activated, another character may charge or use a ranged weapon). example (results variable); 1 round activate, 9 rounds duration for a loss of 10% of their expected DPR for the combat.

Unlucky, the fight lasts 12 rounds. 2 rounds activating, 9+1 rounds duration for loss of 17% DPR.

Buffed, you finish preparations and all opponents are defeated. No action

Player's will however attempt to manage Divine Shield optimally Ragimund (talk) 03:12, July 28, 2019 (UTC)
