- The shadow mastiff is significantly weaker than the dire boar summoned from Summon Creature IV or even dire wolf from Summon Creature III. Specifically, the shadow mastiff has 4 HD (while requiring caster level of 9-10 at least) compared to direwolf's 6 and dire boar's 7. One possible explanation is that the developers overestimated usefulness of shadow mastiff's 1/day specials.
- While earlier creatures summoned by this line of this spells were classified as beasts, Shadow mastiffs are outsiders. This helps them against some negative effects but also makes them immune to buffs like (Greater) Magic Fang.
