Description[]

This spell creates a zone of silence around the target creature, preventing all within the area of effect from casting spells with verbal components. If cast on an ally, no saving throws or spell resistance checks are necessary.

Notes[]

If you were to cast the Silence spell directly on to an enemy, they would be allowed a will save and spell resistance to negate the effects. If instead the spell is cast onto the ground a small circle of silence is created; anything that enters this aura is silenced, with no save or spell resistance check. Silence cast on a summon or party member (depending on PvP settings) also has no checks.

Effects from being Silenced include 100% immunity to Sonic Damage, the inability to cast spells with a Verbal component, and use Bardic Music.

The radius is actually set wrong - it's 4 meters, which is slightly bigger than RADIUS_SIZE_MEDIUM (Etherealness, Implosion, Mass Blindness/Deafness radius). The description, however, states that radius is supposed to be LARGE, which is 4.5 metres. Cloudkill, Mind Fog, and Cloud of Bewilderment use 5 metres, which is even larger than standard RADIUS_SIZE_LARGE, so there's a large difference between these AoEs and standard radius sizes, despite the fact that they are all supposed to have a radius of 4.5 metres - at least according to the in-game spell descriptions. In addition, no exact targeting GUI is available for the actual Silence AoE, so when targeting an area, keep in mind that the actual AoE is bigger than the targeting GUI.

NWN Comparison[]

Casting Silence on yourself in NWN1 created a mobile Silence aura that followed you around, silencing anything that penetrated the circle of white dots. This was especially useful for negating people using the listen skill and abusing silence bugs with casters. There was no will save.

In NWN2 you cannot get the Silence aura to be mobile and cannot target yourself as it's deemed a hostile spell.
