This spell has two modes of operation: targeting a single outsider, or summoning a planar ally. Targeted outsiders are paralyzed for 1 round per 2 caster levels. The type of summoned ally is based on your alignment:

Two of the three creatures here are built around use of special abilities as opposed to being meat shields. That said, Succubus SLAs are not that useful through her level drain can potentially make difference. Sylph is a good caster who can use Summon Monster VI among other things but is incredibly squishy. Celestial bear is much stronger in direct fight than the others but weaker than Dire bear that Sylph can summon.
