Symbol of Mystra

Mystra (miss-trah) provides for and tends to the Weave, of which she is effectively the embodiment. The Weave is a conduit that enables mortal spellcasters and magical crafters to safely access the raw force that is magic.

She is said to have taught the first spellcaster of the Realms, and to have enabled many of the races to use magic. She supposedly weighs and judges each new spell or magical item to determine whether it should be permitted into the Realms. She is most venerated by wizards and those who use magic or magic items in their daily use.

Although good-aligned, Mystra is bound by Lord Ao's decree to keep neutrality in concern of utilization of the Weave. As long as a spell is permitted by Mystra, it may be used by any spellcaster, regardless of alignment and purpose. In compensation, Mystra is the patron of the Harpers, a semisecret organization dedicated to battling evil and maintaining the balance between nature and civilization. The battle against evil is aided by Mystra's Chosen: Elminster, Khelben "Blackstaff" Arunsun, and the Seven Sisters, individuals who were granted longevity and vast magical powers by the goddess of magic.

She has slain Myrkul, the second god of death, during the Times of trouble .
