Specifics

Darkvision is the extraordinary ability to see with no light source at all, out to a range specified for the creature.

Darkvision is black and white only (colors cannot be discerned). It does not allow characters to see anything that they could not see otherwise -- invisible objects are still invisible, and illusions are still visible as what they seem to be. Likewise, darkvision subjects a creature to gaze attacks normally.

The presence of light does not spoil darkvision. If a character has darkvision with a 60-foot range, and he stands within a 20-foot radius of light, the character can see normally in the light, and 40 feet beyond the light because of his darkvision.

Gameplay notes[]

  • As of patch 1.10, both Darkvision and Low-Light Vision are an action mode that can be toggled.
  • This feat is bugged. It will only work if given by default from a racial or class feat. Items and spells that claim to give Darkvision will not actually give anything. According to internal comments, this bug was known to Obsidian atleast by the time of MotB development yet they did nothing to fix it.
  • It should be noted some creatures get their expected racial traits from the always equipped "creature properties" item. If a creature's intended Darkvision is gained through such an item, it will not work.
  • Common way to fix the bug is to make spell/item in question temporaly give Darkvision as a feat. That said, internal comment by Patrick Mills warns that this can break characters or save games.
  • One can also use the console to manually give the feat:
    1. select character to receive Darkvision
    2. press the "~" button, which opens the console, then type and enter these lines:
      • debugmode 1
      • givefeat 228
      • debugmode 0
    3. press the "~" button to close the console
